Change and loss

I’ve got some sobering news for you.

One day–hopefully very far from today–you and I and everybody we know will not exist on this planet anymore.

In the midst of a sunny spring that heralds rebirth and renewal, I’ve been contemplating death, loss and change.  One of my dear friends lost a loved one recently.  I also have been nursing my ailing dog and am coming to grips with the fact that Stevie Wonderdog might not live another 20 years.

I don’t know why death seems to be such a surprise as it’s literally the one thing baked into the contract.

So.

We’re all going to die one day.

But not yet and not today.

While you are still alive, live.  Make something beautiful of your life.  Make it count.  Make it matter.  Do things that are important to you and others.  Have that extra treat.

As Mary Oliver asks, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
