AI, the great equalizer

We’ve been talking a lot about AI lately.

And as much as I’ve harped on this idea that it’s nothing to fear, on the other side of the spectrum, some of us in the nonprofit world feel like we’re out of the loop, slow on the uptake, or maybe even behind the curve when it comes to using AI in our organizations.

When you really stop to think about it, generative AI is the next great equalizer… after easy access to public education, the dawn of the internet, and the invention of microwave dinners, of course. 💥

We are all experiencing this new and exciting tool for the first time. The potential applications are seemingly limitless–with the right prompts and careful oversight.

It’s affordable, easily accessible, and it doesn’t care who you are or what kind of degrees you hold.

(Microsoft even offers free resources to help nonprofiteers learn about the kinds of technology that are available and how to use them.)

But, at the same time, because it’s such an unexplored territory, it requires the laying down of certain ground rules in your organization before you allow your staff and volunteers to become free-range AI users.

Simply put, we should invite AI innovation and exploration within our organizations so that we don’t fall behind on this emerging technology. But, to protect ourselves and our NPOs, we have to get ahead of the game.

Here are just a few:

  1. Always proofread and add finishing touches to anything AI-generated.
  2. Use generative AI only when it makes sense and/or doesn’t require a personal touch.
  3. If you include personal or sensitive details, do so only in a closed-system AI program. (This will require some research to ensure that information is kept private.)

There are so many ways you can begin implementing the use of AI in your NPO. But if you don’t know where to start, I have just the podcast to help you begin integrating AI into your mission-driven work.

In today’s episode, I sit down with the phenomenal Devi Thomas, a beacon of knowledge from Microsoft Philanthropies, who’s illuminating the path for nonprofits in the digital age.

Devi shares her transformative journey from a journalistic epiphany to becoming a tech philanthropy guru, advocating for ethical AI adoption across the nonprofit sector. Her insights reveal that the integration of AI isn’t just a trend; it’s a toolset for improving efficiency, personalizing donor engagement, and scaling impact with a tactical edge.

Devi, with her feet firmly planted in the nonprofit world and her eyes on the horizon of technological advancement, believes that adopting AI starts with embracing our curiosity and permitting ourselves to experiment. From optimizing volunteer training with bespoke AI-generated curriculums to leveraging AI for nuanced donor communication strategies, she underscores that AI’s potential to revolutionize nonprofit operations is immense – if wielded with intention, transparency, and inclusivity.
