I’m not going to lie. It’s been weird and I have had some withdrawal symptoms. It feels strange to not have my phone at hand to idly check on Instagram feeds or Facebook updates while I’m waiting on line or on the subway. I have this feeling of–what is this–boredom? For the first time in a while, I’m not being constantly stimulated or scrolling and my brain can sort of wander. Also, it’s interesting to look around and see how many people are focused on their little screens. It’s hard not to feel just a little bit smug.
I also realize how much free time I have now. Days ago, I would have allowed myself to fall into a rabbithole of obsessively checking my phone for hours and now that I’ve deleted social media and all I have is email and text, there’s no reason to be on my phone. Though, I have watched a lot of TED talks on Youtube, but I put that under the “education” category.
Now that I’ve quit, I realize what a mindless habit it was to have my phone. It was like a weird little security blanket to stave off boredom, loneliness or feeling awkward in a social setting. I feel more in control of my mental space and my energy without the addiction to social media.
