Why does it seem like some people have a certain je ne sais quoi… for getting donors to say “yes!” while others only have the ability to repel potential donors from a mile away?
I can tell you after years of fundraising trial and error that some people really do have an X factor when it comes to fundraising. However, because fundraising is half skill and half art, you can become really good at it if you have the will to learn.
Successful fundraising requires two main qualities: the will and the skill.
But it also requires a secret ingredient you can’t do without: relationships.
That’s one reason we always start with our inner circle and move outward when prospecting. We know that people are more motivated to give when they feel a personal connection to the asker and an affinity to the mission of the organization.
But, that doesn’t mean you can only speak to a potential donor if you have a personal introduction–this isn’t Victorian England. 😏
You CAN create major donor relationships out of thin air if you keep a few important principles in mind:
- It’s not about you; it’s about them.
- You are giving them a gift. Get over your money mindset.
- The outcome isn’t the most important thing.
Contrary to popular belief, great fundraising has nothing to do with sleazy tactics and manipulation. If you want to create a sustainable organization with a robust major individual gifts program, it all starts with putting the donor’s needs first.
We are the Yoda to their Skywalker. When we set out to deliver value and help them find the path to their ultimate fulfillment, we literally can’t go wrong–X factor or not.
