I’ve got my mind on my money…

Anybody who has met me, listened to my podcast or read any of my stuff knows that I love talking about money.

Why is that?

Aside from the obvious answer that I teach about fundraising, I want to set an example for women of color to be comfortable talking about money.

We’re taught that talking about money is unseemly and yet money is the factor that makes so many things possible: social change, survival, salaries.

And yet, in the end, money is just money. It’s that we collectively imbue it with so much meaning.

We make these little pieces of paper mean something about our value as humans. We make it mean survival, power, prestige, belonging, and legacy.

But it’s really just little pieces of paper.

How do we hold the tension of two things being true at the same time: money is hugely important to make things happen and that money is as important as you make it mean in your life.

I also find that as women, we feel that we need to justify why we want lots of money. We follow it up with qualifiers like: I want to take care of my family or I want to give more to charity or I need to pay for my kids’ college.

All those things might be true, but it could also be true that I just want to have a lot of motherf’ing money JUST BECAUSE I WANT TO.
