As non-profit leaders, we all feel burnt out at one point or another.
Often, that feeling pushes us into survival mode.
Our amygdala is all geared up and shouting, “It’s all up to you! You have to get those funds! You have to keep the program alive! You need donors fast!”
And for fundraisers like you and me, that turns into a big problem when it comes to our donor relationships.
We begin entering into every conversation with the sole purpose of solicitation.
We’re waiting for our turn to speak instead of engaging in a deeper level of conversation.
And when our turn does come, we shut down all hope of gaining their trust by hitting them up with a sneaky ask.
It’s a desperate move to save our own skin, not an attempt to help the donor feel fulfilled at all.
And the biggest problem is, we can’t grow our organization by suckering people into donating.
We need to attract people who are wholeheartedly committed to our mission while strategically repelling those who aren’t.
It’s a delicate balance that requires you to be fully functioning in your executive, not survival, mode.
So what can you do about it?
☝ Well, first you have to identify the root of your burnout.
☝ Then, you have to be willing to ask for help.
☝ And finally, you have to begin to focus on cultivation more than transactions.
The burnout will leave, and growth will come.
But don’t just trust me! Check out this week’s episode of Nonprofit Lowdown to find out what’s causing your burnout, how you can turn on executive mode, and what tools you can use to develop donor relationships that lead to big asks with big results.
